Manhasset Student Aid Reaches Out to the Community
The Manhasset Student Aid Association (MSAA) embarks on its annual fund raising campaign with a community-wide mailing this month. For over 40 years MSAA, the organization that assists needy Manhasset students with their post high school education, has turned to the people of Manhasset to support its efforts. These efforts have been very successful, with 25 students receiving a total of over $90,000 in aid last year alone.
“This is a very difficult time to ask people for money,” says MSAA President Jean O’Malley, “but it’s an even more difficult time to try to fund a college education.” With credit tight and loans not flowing as usual, the number of students in need is rising. A great increase in applications to MSAA is therefore expected.
Students receive MSAA funding either as outright grants, or, for those who need a more short term solution, interest free loans. All graduating high-school seniors living in Manhasset (from both public and private schools) will receive an MSAA application in May. During the summer months the most needy are identified from submitted applications by the organization’s Selection Committee. In her presentations at both Senior Parent Night and Financial Aid Night, Mrs. O’Malley explained the MSAA mission and encouraged all to visit the group’s website. “By going to MSAAinc.org, donors, parents and students can all find out much more about our work and can even download our application.”
Manhasset Student Aid Association is an all volunteer 501(c) (3) charity. The directors and officers are Manhasset residents who will be writing personal solicitation notes in the hopes that the Manhasset community, which has always been so generous, will once again make MSAA’s work possible in this most important of years.
