Manhasset Student Aid Grant Program A Big Success
The Manhasset Student Aid Association (MSAA), a 42 year-old organization that assists local students with their post high school educational needs, has announced great success with its new Grant Program. For many years MSAA has offered interest-free loans to those who cannot achieve the finances necessary to fund college. These loans are still offered, but realizing that graduating college students are often overburdened with debt, MSAA now attempts to lighten that burden by offering grants to those most in need.
With the announcement of the new Grant Program, MSAA made a renewed effort to identify the most deserving students. Presentations were made at the Manhasset High School Financial Aid Night and at the Manhasset/Great Neck EOC, familiarizing residents with the MSAA application process necessary to properly distribute the funds. The Manhasset High School Guidance Staff, led by Jane Grapone, was especially helpful. Always keeping confidentiality a priority, members of the MSAA Selection Committee met with the Guidance staff and worked hard to remain in contact with those students that often get "lost" in the college application process. These efforts paid off and the results are impressive. This year, after a significant increase in the number of new applications for assistance, MSAA awarded almost $100,000 (mostly grants) to 21 needy Manhasset students who otherwise would struggle financially to achieve their higher education. This represents a significant increase in both the dollars awarded and the number of students helped.
"These results are very gratifying," said MSAA President Jean O'Malley, "but none of it would be possible without the incredible efforts of our Selection Committee, who spent some lovely summer days on the phone, in meetings, sending emails, and in general, encouraging these young people to take their future in hand."
The MSAA is funded entirely through the largesse of the Manhasset community. Its March drive is an annual event and MSAA hopes that residents will remember these successes, realize the importance of education, and react with even greater generosity.
